http://www.mssqltips.comThank you all for attending my MSSQLTips webinar today with Sumeet Bansal from Tegile Systems! In the presentation, I made reference to a disk stall collector that you can use to help collect and store database file-level latency statistics into a database for future reference, as well as an aggregation script that analyzes the metrics to provide a percentile analysis of the storage performance trends. These metrics can be presented to a storage administrator to help you demonstrate latency trends and help identify any performance challenges.

Disk Stall Collection Aggregation

In addition to the disk stall collector, which collects disk latency metrics at the SQL Server level, you can also use Perfmon to collect raw data at the Windows layer. I have a Perfmon setup guide on this site that you can use to set up Perfmon for 24×7 collection to overlay Windows-level statistics with the SQL Server-level statistics from the disk stall collector. Check out the guide here!

This Tuesday, June 23rd, at 3pm Eastern time I will be co-presenting a free live webinar with Sumeet Bansal from Tegile Systems at MSSQLTips entitled “Performance insights and tuning of Physical and Virtual SQL Servers”. Register for this free webinar here! All registrants will be registered for a ShootingAuthority.com raffle for  GoPro Hero digital video camera too!

Webinar Description:

This session will cover some of the best practices on setting up SQL Server in a virtual environment. You will learn what knobs and levers to tweak to get the best performance out of your setup. The speaker will cover various methods of collecting and analyzing performance data as well as pinpointing performance bottlenecks. You will also see a demo of performance you should expect from your virtualized SQL Servers. By the end of the session, you will have the information to improve utilization by leveraging virtualization for your SQL Server platform while delivering high performance. You will also have the necessary tools and data to have an educated conversation with your storage teams.

Speakers:

DavidKlee David Klee is a Microsoft MVP and VMware vExpert with over seventeen years of IT experience. David spends his days handling performance and HA/DR architecture of mission-critical SQL Servers as the Founder of Heraflux Technologies. His areas of expertise are virtualization and performance, datacenter architecture, and risk mitigation through high availability and disaster recovery. You can read his blog at davidklee.net, and reach him on Twitter at @kleegeek.
SumeetBansal Sumeet Bansal as a VP of IT and lead DBA implemented flash technology at wine.com in late 2009 to solve critical business problems. He implemented the first data warehouse at wine.com to streamline analytical reporting. He has over 16 years of IT experience covering database platforms such as Oracle and SQL Server along with datacenter architectures. His database experience involves extensive hands-on work with database performance, application acceleration and systems administration. These last few weeks have been quite a blur of projects, travel, and end-user training, and I’m enjoying every bit of it! Here’s a recap of what I’ve been up to, with links to the educational materials for you to download and review.

On April 25, I presented a SQL Saturday Chicago preconference training session called “Virtualization for SQL Server DBAs” to a packed house in Addision, IL. We had a great time and all learned a lot, and I thank each and every one of my wonderful attendees for their enthusiasm, open dialogue, and great questions.

The following day was SQL Saturday Chicago. I presented two sessions – SQL Server Virtualization 101 and  Virtualized SQL Server Performance to standing room only classes. Thanks to all of the great attendees in these sessions! The slides for these two sessions (Virtualization 101 / Performance) are available now for you to download and review.

Heraflux-Logo-Color-SMAlso, this was the first event that my company, Heraflux Technologies, has sponsored. We co-sponsored the event with a new partner organization of ours, Yucca Group. We were very happy to raffle away two SQL Server books and a copy of VMware Workstation as part of the end-of-day give-a-ways.

yucca_groupHeraflux is known for our world-class SQL Server virtualization services, and Yucca Group is known for Oracle virtualization services. It’s a fantastic match, and look for more co-sponsoring opportunities and joint community education seminars from the two of us in the future!

Teglie-Logo-Blue-Transparent-smallNext, on Thursday May 1 I presented a webinar on Easy SQL Server Benchmarking, hosted by Tegile Systems. The topics covered how to use SQLIO, DVDStore, and HammerDB. We ended up with a problem with the webinar software, and some registrants were not get into the webinar. The webinar recording is now live and available for you to watch at your convenience here.

On Saturday May 3, I was fortunate enough to be selected to speak at the SQL Saturday Atlanta event. I spoke on my Virtualized SQL Server Performance  session again, and due to popular demand and exceeding room capacity, had the opportunity to re-present the session later in the day to those who missed out that morning. As always, the slides are now available for you all to download.

Thank you to all of the coordinators, volunteers, sponsors, attendees, and other speakers for all of these fantastic events. We appreciate each and every one of  you and your contributions to these world class events.

sql saturdayComing up, I’m speaking at SQL Saturdays in Detroit, Iowa City, Rochester NY, and Portland ME. I’m also giving my Virtualization for SQL Server DBAs preconference training day the Friday before the SQL Saturday in Iowa City, Rochester, and Portland. Register soon for these SQL Saturdays, and if you are interested, one of the precons for the events. It’s the best education that you can get on key topics, and the price you pay is just a fraction of the amount that it is worth. I’d enjoy having you in my class!

PASS_VC_VirtualizationI am also presenting the second in a four part webinar series for the SQL PASS Virtualization Virtual Chapter entitled ‘Virtualization for SQL Server DBAs 201‘ on May 14th. If you were not able to catch the previous 101 session, it is available for you to watch before the upcoming 201 session. RSVP for this free event today!

It’s an exciting time! I can’t wait to see you at these events!

Teglie-Logo-Blue-Transparent-smallOn Thursday, May 1st, I will be presenting a new webcast with Tegile Systems entitled “Easy SQL Server Benchmarking”.

Abstract: Do you have a new piece of hardware going into service and want to see how well it performs? Or do you have a few systems and want to see how they compare against each other? Multiple free and easy ways to stress test your SQL Servers exist by simulating an OLTP workload against a real SQL Server and the infrastructure underneath. In this webinar we will demonstrate how to test your storage and SQL Server instances to get raw performance numbers that you can use to compare performance of machines across your enterprise. The utilities DVDStore, HammerDB, and SQLIO will be demonstrated in depth.

The following topics will be explored:

  • How to use DVDStore to get performance metrics from a SQL Server instance
  • How to use HammerDB to get performance metrics from a SQL Server instance
  • How to use SQLIO to show the performance range of the storage underneath a SQL Server
  • How to use these tools to show relative performance differences between two or more SQL Servers

Register today for this exciting webcast!

Teglie-Logo-Blue-Transparent-smallTomorrow at 11am PST I will be holding a free webinar, hosted by Tegile Systems, entitled ‘Avoiding Common SQL Server Virtualization Pitfalls‘.

The following topics will be explored:

  • What are the common issues that SQL Server DBAs encounter with virtualized SQL Servers
  • What talking points and solutions will resonate with infrastructure admins such as Storage and Server administrators
  • How to get the best performance from your mission-critical systems

Register for this free event today! This session will be a blast, and I hope you get a lot out of it!

UPDATE: The recording for this webinar is now available here at the Tegile home page.
